Engagement Party

Remembered when I mentioned that wedding stuff might pop up once in a while? Well here we go. Haha.

Today is our engagement party. I'm sure like us you guys might be thinking... what the heck is an engagement party? Let me tell you we thought the same thing! Great minds do think alike. *nods*

So when we decided to get engaged last April (oh yeah there was really no proposal and stuff, that's a story for another day though), and we told our parents about our choice, my mother was excited (I'm her only daughter, I have one older brother) and she said let's have an engagement party! I should note here she also offered to pay for it. Cool whatever.

I had no idea what that was. I have heard of a bridal shower... but that was about it. Anyways thank goodness for the internet. From my research an engagement party is usually a dinner where the bride's family and groom's family get to know each other and for the bridal party to be announce. Sounds small and simple. I like simple. ^_^ Plus our parents haven't met, I have met his parents and he has met my parents but our parents never met each other. Also most of our bridal party didn't know each other, me and Patrick decided to have 3 people each, one person from when we were young, one person from college and one person from after college.

We happened to mention to my mother on the day she thought having an engagement party that yeah that sounds good and since Patrick is half Filipino we can have it at a Filipino restaurant because lets face it our wedding will be mostly Chinese. My mother inquired about having a party there and called us basically the next day saying that it can hold 75 people. She said yeah that we probably won't need that much, she will only be inviting about 30 friends or so. Um... what? I thought this was suppose to be small and simple... close family and bridal party.

Um okay, let me tell you that I'm a pretty easy going person but I was worried that this would cost too much for my mother... but hey it is her money and she can do whatever she wants with it so whatever. Also this was all before me and Patrick actually did any wedding planning. Like one being making a guest list. So me and Patrick had to scramble to make a guest list and set a budget. I mean you can't have people at your engagement party that's not invited to the wedding right?

My mother was really insistent on booking the engagement party place. So we met up with her on a weekend and she showed us her list of invites.... 40 people! I probably should mention here that she failed to include me, Patrick, his family (his parent's where the only ones coming, his brothers couldn't make it) and our bridal party (and of course their SOs) which in total is another 15 people. So that made the number to 55. It seems the Filipino restaurant quoted us for 60 people and to be honest it was not a bad price the gave us. It was kind of sad we were unable to invite any other friends outside of our bridal party because of my mother outrageous list, thought granted half of those people were actually family.

So we are heading off today to go to an engagement party with 60+ people (yeah my mother started inviting more people!). I was a little worried that we wouldn't have enough food but we have cake so it should be fine. It should be fun. ^_^ Wish me luck!

I hope everyone out there is having fun too.

Finally - Final Fantasy 7

So on Saturday I finally got my memory card that can hold FF7. Curiously a 4 GB memory card at Best Buy was 20 bucks and the 8 GB was 50+ bucks and the 2 GB was 22 bucks. Um... of course I'm going to get the 4 GB.

Anyways.... turns out it takes over an hour for the game to download and another hour for it to install. Seriously Sony? You are lucky I want to play this game because you are sure putting enough barriers... man if it was any other game... I might have thrown the PSP away and called it a day.

When it FINALLY got installed I was able to play it. Like I said I have never played this game, but I did see my brother play it a little bit so the opening was pretty much the same, and Patrick has seen me play it now off and on and says yup it's pretty much the same.

Right now I'm about 10 hours into it and it's a lot of fun. There are little things you have to do to trigger events and run around through maze like areas, and I think because I'm playing it on a PSP it's hard to see a couple of things... like seriously some of the areas Cloud (the main character IE you) is like a speck on the screen and you have to move him around.

The fighting is pretty much like a lot of FFs and easy to pick up. For me it seems the music is about the same as other FFs but Patrick says it's special.

I haven't really gotten too in-depth in the story but it seems a lot of people think the story is fab, and I hope I feel the same way when all is said and done.

I will update you guys on my saga. ^_^

Little Big Planet

We first heard about this game a long time ago and it seemed really exciting to play. Then last year at Comic Con they had demos that people can play and that got us more excited about it. So we pre-order it (this is kind of rare because we are kind of bargain gamers in the sense we usually buy games on sale or from Amazon's game deal of the day). Good thing we pre-ordered it, it seemed they had trouble with the game when it was released but pre-orders got the game sooner than anyone else. Yay Us.

She said :

When Patrick first mentioned this game, it looked like a platformer, and you know what - I am not very good at platformers... AT ALL. I really suck at jumping over things in a row... I will almost always mess up when having to do that and restart the dumb level! The only thing that drew me to this game was that it was CUTE! ^_^ I mean you wouldn't think a sack boy would be so cute... in fact one would think it's a bit scary but nope they were cute.

When we finally got the game we started playing it right away. It was pretty fun to play two players. In fact I had so much fun I actually created a PlayStation account because of this so I can decorate my little cardboard box thing and basically have my own game. Though it seems if you play with another person on their game, you beat the level too in your own personal game. Which I thought was a good deal since I got to keep all the cool stuff that I got when I was playing with Patrick. In this game there are a few things you can only get if you are playing with multiple people.

I really like this game was kind of hard but not too hard, so basically anyone can play. In the later levels it gets really tricky to play with more than one person (especially the last level!) because the camera gets funky at points. At times one of would just die out so the other person can go without all the weird camera stuff working against us. To do this, you have to use up all the life regeneration at a check point, so when there is one person left, if they die before reaching a new check point you have to start the level all over again. It was kind of stressful to be that person, so usually Patrick was the person that ran through without me.

We almost didn't beat the game because the last level is super hard! There is a big circle thing that you have to get through that's like a maze but it's moving too and there are spots where you can die on it. It was crazy... we must have tried to beat that level a few dozen times before giving up and deciding to move on to another game.

Then one of my friends was visiting us and he actually beat the game and offered to help us… seriously what he did in just an hours we couldn't do in a month… he helped us beat the game. It was crazy mad skillz he had. Seriously we couldn't have done it without him. Thanks Mark Kwan!!!

This game is pretty fun and meant to do in a group. I can totally see this as being a party game, the only thing is PS3 controllers cost a small fortune which is why we don't use it as party game. I guess our friends can bring over their controllers but we don't have many friends that have a PS3... we are a Wii generation it seems. ^_^

He said :

This game has gotten quite a bit of press. The game is basically a platformer, but in addition to the game, there is a robust level design mode. When I first got the game, I was really excited. I had heard nothing but good things about it. Well, I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed the game, but I do think it was a little over-hyped.

The most disappointing aspect for me was the actual gameplay. It's a platformer, so there is a lot of running and jumping. However, the controls felt way too mushy. The physics in the game made it very hard to make precise jumps, and caused much frustration and dying. Also, the levels are split into three different layers (front, middle and back) to give a quasi-3D effect. If any of you played Guardian Heroes on the Sega Saturn, it's much like that. Anyway, the game tries to be smarter than you and assume what layer you want to be in as you progress. In most cases it works, but every once in a while it totally messes you up, causing more frustration and dying.

Regardless of the gameplay issues, the multi-player aspect is actually really fun. You can play with up to four total players. You play each level competitively for points, but there are also some puzzles scattered throughout the levels that allow you to cooperate.

The big draw to this game is the level designer. This is actually where this game shines. If you like building stuff, then this is definitely for you. It's like playing with really cool Lego's and being to build just about anything you want. What's really neat is that you have all the tools you need to build a levels just like the ones that are in the campaign mode. Unfortunately, my problem is that I'm not creative enough to make cool levels and lost interest in this mode fairly quickly.

Overall, Little Big Planet is a fun game with some cool bells and whistles.

More About Us

Hey everyone! First off thanks for reading our blog!

We are excited to start reviewing.

Our plan is to have a review every Wednesday morning, maybe one non-game review on Fridays if we happen to think of one and another post on Sunday (like this one!) that’s not a review. See how that works for us.

I (she) had a blog for a few years which I updated daily it was just a random blog with just my thoughts and feelings and at the time I was single and dating and had a lot of funny stories to tell about bad dates, but now I have Patrick and though we have funny issues they aren’t as funny as those bad dates. Then work, school, wedding planning and life sort of got in the way and I haven’t updated that blog for a while. So sad! Though I made a lot of friends from it, I think I’m okay with letting it go and starting a new blog with Patrick.

I know you must be thinking why did she say all that? Well this is the main reason that I’ll be writing most of the time. So a lot of things will sound like they are from me or have my tone of writing, if that makes any sense. For some reason Patrick is kind of boring when it comes to writing, in real life he can talk your ear off but for some reason he can’t seem to put into writing. As for me I try to write like I talk sort of thing and I tend to be a nature exaggerator, so keep that in mind.

Hopefully we can make Sunday post fun and exciting and maybe a way to get people to know us.

Oh yeah Happy Father’s day everyone! We are going out with my dad and family tonight to celebrate (Patrick’s family is in So-Cali, if they were in the bay area we would definitely combine). For some reason my dad really wants to go to hometown buffet, he really likes it. You would think he would want to go to a Chinese restaurant but nope…

I think I forgot to mention that I’m 100% Chinese and Patrick is half Chinese and half Filipino. We are both American born and raised and second generation. Usually when people ask me what I am (for some reason most people guess Korean or have no clue) I usually say American because that’s how I roll. Haha.

I wish everyone a Happy Father’s day. Hopefully everyone has had a father figure in their live that they can express thanks to on this day.

*Waves bye for now*

Sony is Trying to Stop me From Playing FF7

Final Fantasy 7 is buy-able on the Play Station Network for 9.99. I (Melody) never played it before. My brother played it when we were younger and Patrick played it when he was younger too. I was like really young when it came out and I really only played handhelds like the game boy and game boy color at the time.

I have tried to play, don't get me wrong. I got a PS2 when I was out of college and asked my brother if I could borrow the game, and you need a PS1 memory card to save PS1 games and for some reason I couldn't find a PS1 memory card, I did buy it online and for some reason it got lost in the mail. I gave up. Then when I met Patrick he had it but there were so many other fun games to play between us.

Patrick told me it was coming out on the PS3 as a download. I told him I wanted to play it so he offered to buy it for me, he went on his PS3 to buy it. For some reason his credit card didn't work on the PS3, he tried to enter it about 3 times before he gave up. I have a play station account and I know you can add money online so he tried to do that, still denied! Hm... that's weird.

So I tried my credit card on my play station account. Accepted! It seems when you buy FF7 on the Play Station Network you can play it on the PS3 and the PSP (you can play it on both if you so desire). Sweet! Did I mention I like handhelds? So since my Play Station account is default on my PSP I thought I would just play it there plus that is the way I want to play it.

I have only been playing my UMDs on my PSP and haven't visited the Play Station Network in a while. Guess what? They won't let me go on the Play Station Network until I have updated PSP software! So annoying. So I go and download the update. If you have never had to do this, you need to go to a separate part of the menu and download the update. Then you have to install it after you download it. Guess what? It won't let me install it because my battery power was too low! I thought not big deal I'll just plug it in and try again. Nope didn't work, still won't let me install it because my battery power is too low.

I really wanted to play FF7 so I checked if I could install the update about every 5 minutes. Denied... denied... denied... I was getting pretty annoyed at this point. I tried playing my DS to take my mind off of wanting to play FF7, right now I'm trying to beat puzzle quest (the first one). But nope still wanted FF7, about 40 minutes of charging finally it would let me install the update.

Now I was able to go to the Play Station network and find FF7 to buy and download it. It was easy to find and I clicked buy and .... guess what? I don't have enough memory at all. I have a 1 GB memory card and it's at 1.3 GB download game. ARGH!

Patrick and me watched anime for the rest of the night since no stores where open when I decided to get this game.

So today we are going out to find a bigger memory card... it sort of feels like a conspiracy trying to stop me from playing this game. Hopefully I'll get to start playing it today. Wish me luck! ^_^

Kamichu

Yay! First anime review. Patrick and I really like anime too, we tend to watch a few episodes a week about one thing or another. We are thinking that for Fridays we might post a blog or we might not and it will be a review that's not a video game. I hope you enjoy our review.

She said :

Me and Patrick have been going to Fanime (it's the bay area anime convention) every year since we have started dating. We usually go for the dealers room. Well this anime had a cute box and it seem pretty interesting so I thought we should get it.

We started watching it after we finished the series we were watching which we finished around the time we picked this up.

I think it's kind of interesting in a boring sort of way. I like it because it has a great innocence to it and kind of made me feel like I was back in middle school or high school.

Patrick watched the first couple of episodes with me, but then he went away the next weekend for a conference and while he was away I started watching it on my own thinking that I would only see a few episodes and Patrick can just catch up later, but watching one episode after another, I ended up having only 3 episodes to go by the time Patrick came back and he sat and watched the last 3 with me.

It's about a middle/high school girl that became a god and is working through figuring out what type of god she is with the help of her friends. She very quite and sweet type of girl that is easily influenced by one of her friends that owns a shrine. She tries her best to help people and sprites while still trying to find her self and figuring out how to confess her feelings to the boy she has a crush on.

I guess it's addicting in the way it sort of sneaks up on you on how many episodes you have seen because nothing really big happens in any one episode, it's almost like you can watch them in any order and you will still be generally okay with what's going on.

I did like this series but I don't think I would watch it again... unless I was super bored and just wanted background noise going on.

There was really no message in this anime that I saw and it was sort of confusing how the main character became a god or why she's a god. Maybe the message is to be happy with who you are and not worry so much about what you "should" do, I don't know I have never been good at figuring out the messages of things, you might have to just watch this for yourself to figure it out. Good luck! ^_^

He said :

Yay, our first anime review. Too bad it's for a show I only saw a few episodes of. I think this is going to be a short review. . .

So, anyway, Melody bought this series and we started watching it just before I had to leave town for the weekend. I saw the first episode and maybe part of the second. As far as I could tell, it was the story of a school girl, who also happens to be a god. There's a guy who will turn out to be a love interest and some friends she hangs out with. It's a real slice-of-life story. . . and did I mention the main character is a god? Oh, it was also really boring.

Anyway, after I get back in town from, I get to watch the last couple episode. I'm thinking that it might have gotten more exciting. I was wrong. In addition to the original cast of characters, there are some weird animal/ghost things. I can't even tell you what they are because I have no idea. The friends are still there and that guy who is the love interest is still there. Oh, it was really boring.

The bottom line is this: I saw the beginning and the end and it did not make me want to watch any more of it.

Zack & Wiki Quest for Barbaros’ Treasure

Our first review! How exciting. We decided to do Zack and Wiki Quest for Barbaros' Treasure because this one of the few games we both played and finished together. It's a Wii game.

She said :

So here is the story. I was checking Amazon, and you know how from your search and buy history they kind of know what you like? Well Amazon suggested this game to me and I was looking at the reviews and it got pretty good reviews. I try my best not to buy games impulsively so I didn't get it then. Then me and my guy went to game stop that weekend and low and behold it was on sale for about 16 bucks. I got it there... there goes the not trying to buy impulsively right out window, what can I say for myself nothing really. ^_^

Went home right away to play. The first couple of levels were really really fun, and then it got hard around the 5th level. I seriously had no idea what to do. Patrick (my guy) was like let me try and kind of took over the game, but he got it and it was really fun to watch him figure it out and trying to figure it out myself too. So what happens in this game is you try to move around Zack to do things and he has to do things in a certain order to pass the level, it's like a big puzzle. If you do the right things in the wrong order it will probably mess you up. Which I guess is the fun part.

What I liked about this game is the second controller for the Wii acts like a pointer. We think that it's for parents who are trying to help their kids figure out the puzzles without doing it for them. This sounds dumb but it's actually really useful because when I sort of saw something Patrick didn't see, it was easy to use the second wii remote to point at what I'm talking about and sort of show what I think he should do next.

After it got too hard for me, I didn't think I would like this game anymore but when Patrick took over it was actually really fun to figure out the puzzle levels together. It's definitely a game I would suggest for families and couples and maybe close friends to play together.

He said:

If you are a fan of puzzle and brain teasers then this game will be a good fit for you. Since the game is for Wii it definitely has a more family friendly style to it but it is still a very good engaging game for gamer out there.

In game you control Zack in a point and click adventure style using the Wii-mote. You can walk him through the level, pick up stuff and interact with objects. Based on how you interact with the objects you can solve the puzzle on each level. In some puzzles you actually have more than one way to solve them and you get points based on which way you solve the puzzle. Some of the puzzles have time limits which add another dimension to the game.

Outside of the regular game play there is a mini game that find different collectibles throughout the game, this is definitely for gamers that like to complete lists and collect things. There is also a rhythm game that is sprinkled throughout the game, which is a lot of fun and I liked it a lot, at first it was hard to get it to register what I was doing or thought I was doing but after a while I got it and it was really a lot of fun.

I would recommend this game for gamers that are very logical and like puzzles.

About Us

Hi everyone we are a newly engaged couple. We are completely opposite in almost every way except we like video games, anime and eating. Go figure.

My guy thought it would be fun to create a blog reviewing games and maybe anime because he thought my opinion of some games where funny and he had some good opinions about games too.

We hope to lead people into deciding if they want a game or not from our experiences. I hope that our blog is helpful. We hope also that this is a great way to also bring us closer together during this time of planning a wedding which can be stressful.

Our rating system is just going to be a simple yea or nay, just if we liked it or not.

About she (me) : I'm 26 years old, I'm a software engineer, I am getting my masters part time. I like puzzle, RPGs and time management games. Oh yeah my name is Melody.

About he (the guy) : He is 32 years old, a network engineer and builds his own business part time. He likes RPGs, strategy, first person shooters and rhythm games. Oh yeah his name is Patrick.
