Back

So we totally thought we were going to finish reviews and stuff before we left on our cruise... wow we were totally wrong!

Let me tell you if you're anything like us, get things like updating your blog for future posts done at least a week before you leave because the week before you leave is crazy! Every night we were running out to buy something for the trip or checking and double checking if we had all the right stuff for the trip. Making sure we had passports and all the other little important stuff in the right places where we can find them.

These last 3 weeks have been kind of a blur... the crusie and comic con and going back to work... crazy!

We will blog about the cruise and comic con soon promise and have more game reviews on the way.

New Super Mario Bros.

Seriously who doesn't like Mario brothers?

She said :

I have been eyeing this game for a while because Mario brothers is classic, BUT it cost an arm and leg. It was always 35 dollars or more. I didn't want to pay that for a DS game... even now you can't find it for less than 30. I thought okay I'll just wait it out, the price will go down... right? WRONG. Like nintendogs this has yet to go down.

Last year during Fanime, they have this nifty thing called a flea market where they let people sell their junk on Thursday night in the game room. We checked it out, one of the sellers had this game for 16 bucks! Um... even used this game usually goes for way more... Sweet totally bought it.

I had my DS on me at the time and started playing it while we were in "boring" anime screening rooms. I mean when we were in a anime screening room that had a boring anime on.

It was pretty fun but for the life of me I couldn't figure out how to save.

I am the type of person that reads manuals as a last resort, but I had to read this. It turns out that you can't save whenever you want, it seems you have to collect coins (you can get up to 3 in a level) and buy things at shops, when you buy something at a shop you will then have an options to save your game. Really now?

If you don't have enough coins to buy something from a shop to save your game, the manual suggest you just close your DS putting it in sleep mode. I hated this... because it means you can't play another DS game when you get stuck in this one and your battery drains faster from being in sleep mode all the time.

The first couple of levels were pretty easy and then it stayed pretty easy but it was hard to find coins and very chances to save and then I got tired of the game and gave up. I don't want to go back because I'll have to replay all the levels I lost when I gave up.

Overall it was fun, except for that dumb save thing... I probably won't pick up again because of the lame saving rules. ^_^

He said :

Man, I remember getting my first NES for Christmas. It came packaged the original Super Mario Bros and it was super awesome. I was so excited. You know what, that game is freaking hard, but it is a classic and I loved it!

If you're like me and you love the old school Mario and are into platforming, then New Super Mario Bros. does not disappoint. The same platforming element are there, the same enemies and it's still very hard. There are some new abilities, though. The have the super monster mushroom that turns Mario into a huge giant that can basically run through the level, crushing everything in his path, for a short amount of time. There is the mini mushroom that shrinks Mario into a super small version needed to access certain pipes. There is also the koopa shell that allows Mario to slide across the floor defeating enemies. Fun stuff.

One thing that is a little annoying is the save function. During the game, you can discover these secret coins throughout the levels; three in each level. You can use these coins to open other paths through the worlds. Apparently, the only way to save the game is to either bet a boss, or use your coins to open these paths. If you have no boss, or no paths to open, you can't save as far as I can tell. I guess you are just supposed to close the DS when you don't want to play anymore . . . and hope it doesn't run out of batteries?

Well, regardless the game is still cool. If you like SMB, get this game.

Gone Fishing

Hey Everyone!

We are going on vacation starting today. We are going on a week long cruise on the west coast of central america. I know... swine flu. Yup we are a bit worried about that but a good friend of mine who studies this type of stuff says I have nothing to worry about, I hope she's right!

Don't worry we will still be posting reviews while we are away with the handy dandy future post function that blogger has. I would tell you what is to come but what is the fun in that! I should mention now that this was weird for me to say because I HATE surprises, so if you really want to know just shoot me an e-mail or comment on this post.

Then when we come back we will rest for a few days and be on our way to San Diego Comic Con! This is exciting time for us. I hope the best for all of you, have fun! ^_^

Professor Layton and the Curious Village

Another DS game! Yup I like me some hand held games. I hope you enjoy our reviews.

She said :

I heard about this game off of someone else's blog and he was really excited about it, but didn't say much about it. So I went on my mad search to find as much info about it as I can. I found out when it was coming and I thought oh man I had to have it!

It's an awesome story with brain teasers tied in. I really love brain teasers, I use to buy brain teaser books from the local hobby shop when I was little.

On the day it came out, Patrick and I went to a few stores only to not find it in a lot of stores. We finally found it in Best Buy for 30 bucks which was a-ok with me, I really wanted it so I was okay not getting it for a steal.

I really really love this game. I love the art, I love the story, I love the voices and I love *most* of the puzzles. I didn't finish all the puzzles but I did manage to beat the game even though I didn't do that. So HA! *This is directed at Patrick who did finish every single puzzle in the game*

I thought it was the perfect length too, it wasn't too short and it wasn't too long, it was just enough for me. Also what was great for a few months you could download a new puzzle every week, they were suppose to have that be for a year but somehow it doesn't work anymore or at least the last time we checked which was a few months ago, so it might work again now. *shrugs*

I would definitely recommend this game and I have, a lot of my friends got this game after I just talked and talked about it.

He said :

Now... I do enjoy a good puzzle or brain teaser, and I do enjoy a good puzzle game. Well, Professor Layton is the ultimate in puzzle games, and I did enjoy it.

In this game, you control Professor Layton and his assistant, Luke, as they travel through the town of Mystere picking up clues in order to solve a mystery. There really is a 'Sherlock Holmes' feel to the story, which was interesting enough to keep me wanting to find out what happens next. However, even if the story was not engaging at all, this game would be worth it just for the puzzles and brain teasers.

In order to solve the mystery, you must travel through the town and solve a myriad of puzzles and brain teasers. What I really liked is the variety. There were several different kinds of brain teasers and puzzles, ranging in difficulty. It never got old and I found myself wanting to always try the next one. I think I played this game pretty much non-stop until I beat it. Oh, and another cool thing they had in this game is downloadable content. For a while, they were publishing a new puzzle every week that you could download for free. Pretty sweet!

The game play itself is fairly minimalistic, though. There is no jumping or running or anything like that. You just move from one scene to the next using the stylus for your DS. But, who cares. The whole draw of this game is the puzzles and it delivers.

Shakugan no Shana

Patrick and I sort of have these anime phases where we watch anime non-stop for a while and then don't for a while. Well we happen to be in one of those watch anime phases and one of the ones we started watching is Shakugan no Shana.

She said :

We got this one sale online for a pretty good deal. When it came in the mail (with a ton of other anime) I thought this was the most interesting box. Patrick heard from his friend that it was pretty good.

I was in an anime watching mood and so we started watching it, we watched about 2-4 episodes a night.

It was kind of hard to watch at first because you felt bad for the guy main character and I personally didn't like the girl main character, but the story was interesting you were kind of wondering what is going to happen next.

So this story is about a boy (Yuji) that witnesses this monster that suck up souls for some reason he can walk around when these monsters freeze a part of the town to suck up random souls. The monster start attacking him and a girl (Shana) saves him.

Yuji finds out that Crimson Denizens (bad guys) sent the monsters to collect not souls but existence (I know sounds weird, just stay with me for a bit) and Crimson Loads (good guys) send Flame Hazes to stop the Denizens. Shana is a Flame Haze.

When a Denizen monster attacks people and take their existence - they die. Flame Hazes stop this from happening but more over they try not stop the disturbance of the balance of Earth so when a large number of people get their existence taken, Flame Hazes replace the people that died with torches which act in the place of these people and they slowly disappear and fade from other people's memories.

Yuji has a special gift and helps Shana battle Denizens through out the series. Shana through the series learns to deal with her emotions. She also becomes a lot more likable as the series progresses.

I personally thought the ending of this series was good and it tied a lot of loose ends. I would definitely suggest this to other people.

He said :

Shakugan no Shana is a story about the paranormal; about the 'real' world that exists outside our perception of reality. It is a story about the yin and yang; the delicate balance between good and evil and it's effect on the human existence. It is a story about discovering the meaning of love. It's also a story about swords, explosions, creepy incestuous children, and boobs. so, it's basically like any other anime! ^_^

Seriously, though, Shana is a pretty good mix that is entertaining and fun to watch. I wouldn't say it's a masterpiece, but definitely not unwatchable. The premise of the story is that Yuji, the male protagonist, find himself suddenly killed and placed in an alternate reality where a battle rages to keep balance of some sort to the Earth. Eh, I don't recall exactly what they are balancing. Anyway, there are these beings called Flame Hazes that are sort of like these supernatural police officers that go around fighting Denizens that would upset said balance. Shana, the main female protagonist, is one of these Flame Hazes.

Shana, being a Flame Haze, is bound by their duty and are supposed to show no emotion. Yuji, who is dead, should be nothing but an object to be used or discarded by Shana. The back story is how Shana and Yuji's relationship evolves as the series progresses. At some point, a Shana must make a decision between Yuji and her duty to protect the world. Which will she choose? (Add tense music here)
This is a pretty good one to watch. It's not too deep, but it's not mind numbingly shallow. It's just right. My only complaint it the ending. Total cop out if you ask me! Oh well.

Ninjatown

NinjaTown! I have actually never heard of the game till the day I saw and decided to buy it. I have seen the characters around for quite some time and wondered how they were incorperated in this game. It was cute and for a portalable system so I got it. This is a DS game.

She said :

I have a pretty good memory so for almost every game. I might tell the story of why we have it and how much it was when we bought it. I am the one that usually buys games in our relationships, Patrick tells me what he wants and off I go to see if I can find it for a good price, if I can't I usually wait and sometimes it shows up on Amazon's game deal of the day (I seriously check this out everyday). We rarely buy games at full price because we are so backlogged on games we can't justify getting a full price game, but discounted games is another story. *wink*

When Circuit City was going out of business Patrick and I of course went to check it out and they only had a few games and one of them that caught my attention was ninjatown. I have seen that ninja around for quite some time, on blogs and at conventions, and now it has a game. Hm...

Circuit City's going out of business discount wasn't really that good... 20%. But it was a fairly new game and to get it 20% off was a good deal, so we ended paying like 24 bucks for it.

I when I got home I started playing it right away. It was really addicting. It seems it was a tower defense game. I have never played a tower defense game, but it seems to be my kind of game. I like time managagement games and this was exactly that.

I seriously spent all my free time playing this game. I managed to beat it in about 3 weeks.

If I were to offer one tip it would be, when new ninjas get unlocked don't spend all your money on just them, you should have 1 or 2 of them in the new level but just keep buying up cheaper/basic ninjas because that's your bread and butter.

I think if you like hand held games and you like cute ninjas and tower defense type games this might be the game for you. Warning : It's super addicting!

He said :

Ninjatown is a tower defense style game for the DS. This is a genre that I am not too familiar with, and really, I'm still trying to figure out if I like it. At it's core, it's a strategy game. You build ninja houses next to a road. Based on the kind of ninja house you build, you receive ninjas of various strengths and capabilities. As you are doing this, bad guys of various strengths and capabilities advance down the road. Your ninjas attack. When an enemy is defeated, you make money so you can build more ninja houses. Wash, rinse, repeat.

For a game of this type, Ninjatown is unique in that it has a very whimsical style. It's a cute game. I mean, the bad guys are trying to steal the ninja cookie recipe, or something like that. The ninjas themselves are pretty cute to. . . kind of like a little ninja blob. . . thing. It's a very light hearted game, which I thought was pretty cool. It totally does not take itself seriously.

I've only played a few games like this, and so far they have not been able to keep my interest for very long. Although, if you like these types of games, this is one of the better ones.
